This is the transition piece between two others Change and Underneath.

Unexpected has a whole lot more meaning now. We have all been living unexpectedly during quarantine.

Oh the ordinary things I miss:

  • holding my friend’s baby and remembering through touch the softness of chubby thighs I felt a few years ago on my own babies

  • putting off the haircuts, till I could almost braid the boy’s hair, but have so many choices of where and when to go

  • the knot in my stomach when it was my son’s turn to bat or my daughter’s turn to vault

  • giving my friend a good caring hug when her puppy died, because now I get it

  • going to the library and having the extra motivation to finish the book pronto ‘cause it was due soon

But among many things I appreciate now, a top one is learning to see the light in the eyes of people that are smiling back under their facemasks

Below are a few process pictures of Unexpected.

If you are wondering about the last few shots in the process, I painted this piece on stretched watercolor paper, mounted it onto a wood panel, trimmed it and finished with cold wax. A process that allows me to display my watercolors without glass. It gives it quite the contemporary look. I promise it is better in person.

What do you miss that used to be normal?
What do you appreciate about today?
